Abercrombie & Fitch's new store Ruehl No. 925
Friday, April 15, 2005
J.Crew Swim Finder send to a friend Great pair of thongs from Lands' End
A&F announced the debut of their new store Ruehl last fall and as of late have only opened about 4 stores across the country with a few more to open soon.  The store itself is supposed to resemble a Greenwich Village brownstone...with several levels to the store and soft lighting to set the mood.  The outside of the store actually looks like an actual NYC townhome...right there in the mall next to Gap or Limited.  I don't know.....seemed a little goofy to me.

Anyway, they are really trying to get people to buy into this idea of "finishing college, moving to NYC, and making it."  I am not sure I really care to be honest.  I just want a nice friendly salesperson...not fake friendly and not annoying friendly...and some great clothes.  The clothes were alright.  Not a huge selection...mainly tees and a few overpriced shirts, but their jeans were nice...even if they were a bit pricey.  It seems they all are these days though.  I really loved that you could get them in several different lengths and they seemed to have a big supply on hand.  Very nice and quite refreshing.

But I found the lighting to be a bit annoying...to dark to really see what color something was and the salespeople...well let's just say...you can tell this store is owned by Abercrombie & Fitch.  To be honest, I think they are trying to hard.  I mean I like a nice place to shop just as much as the next guy, but this just seemed a little over the top to me for what basically boils down is a retail chain store in the middle of a huge shopping mall.  Sorry....but it all just seems a bit odd to me....but then again maybe my age is beginning to show.

Anyway, I would love to hear what you think.  Send me a note and fill me in.

Talk Back
Here's what people are saying... (add your own comment)

You're not saying anything about the service. In fact it certainly seems like you've never even been in an A&F store. All your saying is, its just like A&F. I work at abercrombie, we can get written up or even fired for not greeting our customers. Sure, we used to be extremely mean, but step into an abercrombie tomorrow. We're nice, you shouldn't bash something you don't even know. Maybe the person that was greeting you was going through something diffucult, ever thought that maybe you're not the center of the universe? We try to say "Hello, how are you." to every person that walks through the doors and we do try to help. But how would you like it if you just folded an entire room and as soon as you move away from a table the crowd seems to gather there? This is the reason why we ask if we can help you with the sizes. And of course the customers say no and screw up the entire pile we just folded. Now think about that times 200 customers. It gets real old real fast.

I'd like to see how long you last working there. Don't bash the employees. You don't know how tedious and repetitive our job is.

Peronally I love Abercrombie -- and I get most of my clothes there. I don't work there but I deffiantly know what "kojo" is talking about because I have seen it happen -- people go ripping threw the shirts right after the employees have folded them. I think people should have alot more respect to the people who work at the stores -- They have always been really sweet and helpful -- folding clothes over and over agian and making sure everything looks good isnt easy.

Ok, fist things first:
One, your mentioned "goofy" location "next to Gap or Limited. I don't know.....seemed a little goofy to me"of the store has nothing to do with the merchandize , service quality or the sales staff. Its the mall-stores such as Gap, Limited, and a whole other variety of "goofy" stores are coign to be there and there is nothing managers can do. The lease is a lease.

Secondly, I have shopped at Ruehl numerous times (you could say thats the basic staple of my wardrobe) and not once, I repeat, not once, I have met any sales person who would be considered, as you mention, "fake friendly and annoying friendly". The associates do a wonderful job as afar as customer service and communication goes. Further, what you call fake friendly is a reflection of a nine hour shift on their feet (which are killing them at the end of the day); yet, still the sales staff find the energy to muster up that smile, greet you, assist you with the fitting room, and fold multiple piles of clothing that inconsiderate peoplestray all over the store.
Third, just the phrase "and the salespeople...well let's just say...you can tell this store is owned by Abercrombie & Fitch" makes me angry. The statement reeks of ridicule, ignorance, and false labeling.
Lastly, yuo were right about the lightining- lol too dark for me

i understand your point of view when you speak about the lighting in the stores. But your point of view on the customer service i strongly disagree with. I am an employee at HollisterCo. and we try our best to make our cutomer's shopping experience as easy & comfortable as we can. Folding clothes over and over again gets VERY annoying. Its not like we take the anger out on you guys though we smile & continue to do our jobs to the best of our ability. So i would appreciate it next time if you took other people's feelings into consideration before you begin to trash talk them. If you are so dissatisfied with Abercrombie & Fitch & its other store branches it isnt forced that you shop there. Please dont take this as me comming at you disrepectfully becasue that is not mny goal. My goal is to let you know that actually being in our shoes would be much better than just jumping to conclusions. Thanks again. --Liza

Um, understanding that you may have had a bad day and may be somethings unhappy with how your customers act in the store but 1) you shouldn't let how YOUR day affect your customer service and 2) it's your job to give good customer service.
